How do I transfer money from my british barclays account to my new australian account without it taking days?

My british bank wants me to call them and pay a fortune and transfer websites confuse me and are asking for a lot of personal data that I am not happy to divulge. How expensive would it be to just buy some australian dollars with my british card and deposit it by hand? This is frustrating!
